For instance, let’s say you had been interested in beginning a foreclosure clean-up business. You might not really know anything about this other than house foreclosures are hot within the headlines right now and you are looking at starting this type of company.

So, you log on your favorite search motor, (eg, Google, Google! MSN, etc. ) and key in the keywords “foreclosure cleansing business” or “foreclosure cleaning” or even “foreclosure cleanup” or another relevant keyword expression.

Note: When you kind words into the search engines to find something on the web, the words you key in are called the keyword (one word) or perhaps a keyword phrase (two or even more words with commas within between).

How Businesses Reach the Top of Search results

When you key in these words as well as hit “ENTER”, a lot of sites pop up and also you start to browse (ie, click about the results) and start investigating the websites to see when they have the information you’ll need.

The sites that appear are the results that engines like google, Yahoo, MSN, et al think would be the most relevant towards the keyword phrase (aka research phrase) you keyed in. Companies pay lots of money to be one of the primary two or three pages within the results that search engines like google return.

How do SEO Copywriters Make Their Cash?

One of the actual ways they reach pop up within the first 2 or 3 pages of results would be to have relevant text which has the proper keywords and key phrases. And, this is where you being an SEO copywriter can make lots of money. You write the written text that their site must pop up high in search results.

Many times, companies will simply provide you with a bunch of keywords and key phrases and let you write what you need — as long as it is a certain length (usually 300-500 words).

There are lots of freelance writers – thousands and thousands, if not several million. BUT, only a tiny minority understand what SEO is and how you can write this kind of copy. And, for this reason they’re so sought after.

Google even has a built-in spell-checker. Google automatically checks whether your query uses the most common spelling of a given word. If Google thinks there may be an alternate or better spelling, it will be listed as: ‘Did you mean: (alternate spelling)?’

16. Conversion Calculator
You can use Google to convert units of measurement. Google will convert height, weight, and volume measurements. Simply enter the desired conversion into the search box and Google will calculate the conversion.

17. Earthquake Activity
Google even tracks earthquake activity. Enter “earthquake” followed by the city and state or US zipcode into the Google search box to see the seismic activity in a specific region.

18. Related Websites
Google will display webpages that contain similar content. Include “related:” followed by a website address in the Google search box for a listing of related websites.

19. Linked Websites
When “link:” is used in the Google search box, and followed by a URL, the search results will include a listing of all webpages indexed by the search engine which contain links to the specified URL (i.e. to see how many websites are linking back to your site, or to a competitor’s site).

20. Indexed Pages
When “site:” is entered in the Google search box, followed by a domain name, the search engine locates all documents within a specific domain, including all of its sub-domains. This is an easy way to get a rough idea of the number of pages indexed for a given domain.

True to Google’s mission of making sense of information, Google has made specific and unique information very easy to find.

A “myth” is a traditional story, idea, or explanation which is widely accepted, but actually untrue or unproven. Misconceptions can also be described as modern-day myths. When it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the myths and misconceptions are abundant. We will try to dispel some of the more common Search Engine Optimization myths here…

Myth #1 – SEO Is A One-Time Deal
Search engine optimization is an ongoing process that requires attention and effort over an extended period of time. To do it properly, it is an ongoing process, and definitely not a one-time action.

Myth #2 – Quantity Is More Important Than Quality
When it comes to backlinks, quantity is simply not as important as quality. Attracting a huge number of backlinks is simply not as important as obtaining relevant links from related and trusted sources.

Myth #3 – Meta Tags Are No Longer Relevant
While meta tags are not the be-all and end-all of search marketing, they still matter. Including a unique and keyword-rich title and description on each page of a website will help the site rank better in organic search results for those terms. Meta tags may not be as important as they once were, but they do still matter in the world of search optimization.

Myth #4 – PPC Will Help Search Ranking
There is no association between PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising campaigns and how well a website ranks in organic search results. There is simply no evidence to suggest that advertising via AdWords will help improve an organic search ranking.

Myth #5 – Submit Your Website Early And Often
Submitting your website to search engines is no longer a necessity. Search engines use spiders to follow links on a website.

Myth #6 – SEO Is A Scam
Search engine optimization, when done properly, is quite effective. In fact, a website may have a difficult time ranking well at all if it is not optimized adequately.

Myth #7 – SEO Is A Guarantee
As the old saying goes, the only things guaranteed in life are death and taxes. When properly implemented, SEO can very likely improve your organic search rankings. But be leery of any search marketing company that makes guarantees. There are simply too many factors and variables for SEO success to be guaranteed.

Myth #8 – Build It And They Will Come
Once upon a time, before the Internet became so cluttered, you could build something new and interesting and it would attract attention without any effort. But now, with the noise ratio so high on the Internet, you must work to draw attention to your innovation. Do not assume that people will find it simply because it is cool!

Myth #9 – NoFollow Links Are A Waste Of Time
Acquiring links that are tagged as “NoFollow” are not a waste of time. A mix of both DoFollow and NoFollow links looks far more natural to the search engine algorithms than a website that has all DoFollow or all NoFollow links. Additionally, some search marketing studies suggest that not all search engines pay attention to the NoFollow attribute, and they do in fact value a NoFollow link the same way that they would value a DoFollow link.

Myth #10 – Google Is The Only Search Engine
While it is true that Google is by far the largest search engine, a decent volume of web traffic can still be generated by achieving a high ranking in other search engines for competitive search terms.

Base your search optimization on facts, and not on myths or misconceptions! And always remember that nothing about SEO is ever an absolute.

Sitemaps are simply “road maps” that search engines can use to navigate their way through the various parts and sections of a website. The sitemap essentially tells the search engines where the various pages are located on the site. This is particularly important for websites that have multi-level navigation, which automated spiders might have difficulty with.

These sitemaps are not difficult to create. Google, Bing, and Yahoo all use a standard sitemap protocol. The larger search engines accept sitemaps in an xml file, and Google goes a step further by accepting them as .txt files or as an RSS feed (which essentially contains a list of URLs on the website).

Webmasters need not struggle with the creation of a sitemap, as there are a number of freely-available tools that will spider their site and create a sitemap in all the accepted formats. One such product is the free “GSiteCrawler” which can be found at http://gsitecrawler.com/ .

If you would prefer to create the sitemap manually, simply open WordPad or any other text editing program, and create a new document. Then, enter the following at the top:

[?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?]
[urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"]

(in all these examples, replace the square brackets [ ] with greater than and less than signs < >)

After that, for each URL in the website that you want the search engines to spider, create a set of [url] [/url] tags, and between them enter a single, full URL inside a set of [loc] [/loc] tags. The subsequent 3 fields shown in the example below are all optional: the [lastmod] tag refers to the last time the webpage was modified; the [changefreq] tag refers to the frequency that the page is changed; and the [priority] tag refers to how important the page is. If you are using software to create the sitemap, the software will automatically populate these fields. If you are manually creating the sitemap, you can choose not to populate them…

[url]

[loc]http://www.domainname.com/[/loc]
[lastmod]2009-09-09[/lastmod]
[changefreq]daily[/changefreq]
[priority]0.5[/priority]

[/url]

Repeat the above for each page URL you want included in the sitemap. After all URLs have been added, close the [urlset] tag as follows:

[/urlset]

Save the file as an XML file. An example of a sitemap file for a site with 2 URLs should look similar to this:

[?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?]
[urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"]
[url]

[loc]http://www.domainname.com/[/loc]
[lastmod]2009-09-09[/lastmod]
[changefreq]daily[/changefreq]
[priority]0.5[/priority]

[/url]

[loc]http://www.domainname.com/[/loc]
[lastmod]2009-10-09[/lastmod]
[changefreq]daily[/changefreq]
[priority]0.8[/priority]

[/url]

[/urlset]

(again, remember to replace square brackets [ ] with greater than and less than symbols < > which are standard in the tags of any markup language)

Submitting A Sitemap
There are a couple of different ways to submit your sitemap to the various search engines. If you have an account in Google Webmaster Tools or Bing Webmaster Central, you can submit your sitemap through your accounts there. Additionally, you can ping the sitemap using the following syntax for Bing, Google, MoreOver, and Ask…

Bing: http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?siteMap=http://www.domain.com/sitemap.xml
Google: http://www.google.com/webmaster/tools/ping?sitemap=http://www.domain.com/sitemap.xml
MoreOver: http://api.moreover.com/ping?u=http://www.domain.com/sitemap.xml
Ask: http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http://www.domain.com/sitemap.xml

Sitemaps are simply maps for search engines to follow, and will ensure that all the important pages on your website are spidered and included in the various search engines.

Search engine optimization is a continuous changing process, one that must always be revisited and adapted as search algorithms are changed by the search engines. Because SEO is a constant process, it is often pushed to the bottom of the “to do list” of marketers. Be that as it may, resolve not to ignore search engine optimization as it cycles its way through your task list. Give search engine optimization the attention that it deserves.

There are few things that you can do that will result in virtually “free” traffic, and therefore SEO deserves both time and attention.

1. Unique Titles

Every page should have a unique title that relates to what is included on that specific webpage. Do not make the mistake of using the same title on every page on a website.

2. Unique Descriptions

Each and every webpage within a website should contain a unique meta tag description. Audit web pages and develop summary descriptions of the page’s contents; including critical keywords and phrases.

3. Robots.txt

Check the webpage’s robots.txt files. An incorrectly formed robots.txt may prevent search engines from properly spidering web pages within a website.

4. Link Building

Participate in link building opportunities. Building links will increase a website’s popularity and search engines use this as a factor when they weigh search rankings.

5. Integrated Keywords

Integrate the appropriate keywords into the websites header tags. There is no point in optimizing a website for keywords that will not convert. Evaluate keywords and phrases that are most effective, and then integrate them into the website.

6. Participate

The online conversation is no longer a quiet hum. Find related forums and blogs and become part of the community. Participate in the discussion and post thoughtful comments that relate to your industry.

7. Log Analysis

Evaluate your logs to determine the habits of website visitors. If there are pages that a high percentage of potential customers leave your website, be sure to make changes. Evaluate the keyword that attract the website traffic and improve on them.

8. Get Social

Social media is a burgeoning market. Develop a comprehensive plant to integrate social media into your 2009 marketing and promotional campaign. Leverage social media websites to increase your websites popularity and exposure.

9. Usability

Add alt tags to images on your website. This will increase the searchability of your website. Additionally, these types of tactics will make your website easier for the visually impaired to navigate.

10. Go Web 2.0

Add tutorials, podcasts, RSS feeds, and videos to your website as a part of your marketing strategy. All of these interactive elements and mediums can attract new traffic to a website. Additionally, many web 2.0 elements can be promoted in alternative channels, increasing your website’s incoming links.

For the coming year be sure to develop a comprehensive strategy to improve your search engine exposure in 2009.

You should not have to look far to find content or new ideas for your podcast show. Look to your daily sources to find fodder and ideas for new podcasting segments.

1. News
Both online and offline sources, from the Associated Press to CNN, contain a deluge of news item each day. Scan headlines on a regular basis to see what catches your eye. In addition, explore your niche market to find any industry-specific news portals that may warrant monitoring.

2. Blogs
Blogs are a fabulous source of ideas and inspiration. Monitor blogs for developing industry news. Comment on breaking news or editorials that you strongly agree or disagree with. Be sure to credit the source of any blog posts that you comment on or quote within your show.

3. Friends & Colleagues
Casual conversation with friends and colleagues often results in ideas for podcast segments. Day-to-day interaction generates ideas worth discussing.

4. Emails
Review emails from customers, colleagues or potential customers. Perhaps a subject or question asked may result in good material for your show.

5. Forum Posts
Forums can be another source of ideas for a podcasting segment. Review forums on a regular basis and keep a list of possible show ideas. You can also editorialize and summarize the forum posts. Or you can tackle difficult questions and those requiring complex answers better articulated in a podcast than typed in a forum.

6. Web Logs
Look at your website’s web logs to determine what shows were very popular or unpopular. Consider doing related segments as a follow up on popular shows. Or focus future shows on the material that generated the most listener interest.

7 Feedback
Encourage a dialogue with your listeners. Ask listeners what they like and what they do not like. Use the feedback to develop future shows. Don’t be afraid to try something new. The more receptive you are to listener ideas, the more they will share. Shape your show for your audience.

8. Advice
Dear Abby and Anne Landers were pioneers in the advice columns, but traditional columnists have failed to take hold online. Consider an advice segment related to your industry inviting listeners to engage you with questions.

9 Conferences
Often products are announced at conferences and trade shows. Candid reviews of new products that might be of particular interest to your audience may appeal to listeners.

Day after day, week after week, or month after month developing content for a podcast need not be a chore. It can be exciting to explore a variety of channels for podcast show ideas and segment topics.

Many people assume that podcasting is all about audio and fail to acknowledge the writing behind the show. Skilled communicators understand the type of planning required in order to pull off a clean final product. The most memorable and effective podcasts are always well planned. Some of the best podcast shows use a script and follow a structured format. The preparation that occurs behind the scenes is similar to what would take place for a radio show.

Podcast Pre Show Preparation Tips

Preshow development, while monotonous and time consuming, will determine the quality of the finished production. Prepare for your podcast by following these simple steps:

Interviews
Prepare interview questions in advance of the show. In addition, develop possible follow-up questions and responses.

Segments
Anticipate how much time each segment should last. Make a schedule, and keep in mind that you can edit audio segments down if necessary.

Prepare Guests
Inform your guests about what they can expect. Familiarize them with the show’s format and give them an idea of the anticipated length of the segment and the general theme of your questions.

Podcast Post Show Production Tips

Transcripts
Do not underestimate the importance of a transcript when it comes to a podcasting. Transcripts boost search ranking and allow you to re-purpose your show’s contents.

Edit
Just as in the movies, your podcast should be melded together with smooth transitions between thoughtfully edited segments. The editing matters! Use software to polish your production.

If a show is recorded in one large segment, it should be edited down. Extraneous audio should be removed. Transition effects, background music, and intro or extro can be added.

Share
Provide your guests with a link to the show. If they are active on the web there is a good chance they will promote the segment on their website.

Establish Resources
Do not forget to add a section with links to any material cited in the podcast show.

The planning and work that takes place before and after a podcast is an important part for a professional show. Do not neglect preparation or post-show production tasks.

A – Alt Tags
All images should include ALT tags. The ALT attribute in HTML is used for three main reasons: the ALT tag provides further details about an image or hyperlinked graphic, the ALT Tags enhances web access for individuals with vision impairments. The ALT tags will also help search engines discern what an image represents.

B – Bandwidth
Compress images and use a mixture of text with images to conserve bandwidth and help your webpages load quickly. Use good design techniques to reduce bandwidth and maintain a fast loading website. This will save both storage space and data transfer allowances.

C – Content Management System
