As you can see I have tinkered some more. I decided I liked having 2 sidebars so I picked the Orange template and adjusted it accordingly. Then I added the Ajax calendar widget to give it another easy way to navigate. With 2 sidebars I have more space to play around hopefully without breaking something.
Finally it is working!

Ok I have spent 8 hours playing with several different blog formats until I finally settled on WordPress. I probably should have started with it as it was the easiest to setup. I did the auto install app routine on my server which gave me version 2.2. Then I wrote over it with version 2.2.3 and ran the upgrade script. It worked like a charm.
